ABLAZE: an a cappella musical thriller

A world premieire original musical written by Matthew B. Zrebski

Staged! is proud to present the professional premiere of Ablaze: an a cappella musical thriller by award-winning Portland playwright Matthew B. Zrebski. (Brunish Theatre in the Portland Center for the Performing Arts April 12-May 5 http://www.pcpa.com/events/ablaze)

At an old abandoned high school on the outskirts of town, a group of teenagers is hanging out.  Suddenly the walls around them go up in flames, and they find themselves  surrounded by fire. Their only chance for escape is a hole in a corner of the gymnasium floor. They jump in. They survive the flames. But the terror is just beginning as they realize that they are not alone…and someone is watching. As their 19 days of captivity progress, personal demons and vendettas emerge with ferocity, forcing them to either turn forever against each other or to fight for survival.

“Uncommonly thrilling…sung and acted with real skill and passion.”—Marty Hughley, The Oregonian

Following a sold-out amateur production at Wilson High School in November 2011, Ablaze continued to astound audiences and critics alike at the Fertile Ground Festival in early 2012. Featured at the State Thespian Festival as one of the top three high school productions for 2011-12, Ablaze is now being launched onto the professional stage for the first time.

Featuring 23 young professional actors from across the Portland metro area, Ablaze is a bold experiment in musical theatre, and an intense and unapologetic look at the lives of adolescents and the issues they must face.
